One sunny afternoon this summer, we decided to make an impromptu visit to Hoo Hill Maze in Bedfordshire. What I love about this place is that it is so personal and private. We rung up to ask if we could visit and the owner, John Brindle, told us to give him a call when we arrived and he'd pop out and let us in!

We therefore had the whole place to ourselves!

John showed us around the acres of land which included a vast maze that John planted himself in 1983, a beautiful secluded orchard and lovely open space where we were given frisbees to play with.

The maze itself measures 30 metres square and 2 metres high with a big 6 metre square centre that houses a lovely wooden structure to climb up and survey the maze. It was designed and planted in the summer of 1983 and John has been developing and maintaining it ever since.

The children had a wonderful time exploring and getting lost amongst the passages of golden leylandii. Around corners and in dead-ends we'd come across little statues of woodland creatures, painted wooden seats or pretty mirrors. Due to the maze being hidden away and not used daily, I walked into a few spiders webs which seemed to be just at my head height much to the children's delight!

Finally we solved the puzzle and found ourselves at the centre where John had built a lovely wooden building to climb and where you could look out over the maze and surrounding area. Having the whole maze to ourselves in the balmy afternoon sun was a real treat and for just under £15 for the 3 of us, was money well spent!

The open fields and gardens provided a perfect spot to enjoy a family picnic while playing with the frisbees or just enjoying the beautiful grounds.

The surrounding orchard is home to a variety of breeds of apples, which John said we could help ourselves to, and is beautiful at all times of the year from the first early snowdrop carpet, through the golden waves of daffodils, the fruit blossom, the summer flowers and the autumn fruit. It was a perfect afternoon, the children had fun running through the maze, we explored the stunning scenery and tiptoed around the extensive gardens. Although no longer open to the public, you are able to ring John and he is happy to open the maze for you if it's convenient.

Hoo hill Maze is also available to hire for functions. perfect for a summer party, children's birthday or wedding, it even has a sound system and after dark, strings of coloured lights thread through the orchard. it's like a magical wonderland.
