Spice rack bookshelves

Ooh I do love a project and ever since I saw the idea of using the Ikea spice racks as bookshelves, I've wanted to give it a try. Finally I got round to doing it and i'm in love with the result. You could choose any colour scheme to go with your child's room - but I think these would look equally cool as a little side shelf next to a sofa or even lovely little beauty products in a bathroom. However you use them, this is such an easy and inexpensive way to brighten up a room and here's how we did it!

Cool spice rack bookshelves

You will need:

Ikea Bekvam spice racks £3.00 each

Spray paint. We used Wilko Enamel spray £3.95 & Rust Oleum craft enamel £3.00 both Wilko

Screws to put up on the wall

Step One:

Check you have all the correct components in the Ikea Bekvam pack. There has been many a time i've been missing a screw!

Step Two:

Begin by deciding on a design for your bookshelves. We opted for a monochrome set with some triangular shapes and a neon yellow and pink set. You could go for a block colour of all white, try out some stripes or paint with blackboard paint so your little one can draw all over it! If you decide on a pattern use masking tape to mark your design making sure you tape up every part of the wood that you DON'T want to paint! It's at this stage that you also want to make sure you are taping the right side of the shelf - you don't want to get to the part when you're putting it together and you realise you've painted the wrong side!!! (I've done it)

Step Three:

Get your spray on! Either outside or in a well ventilated area, spray the bookshelf components in your chosen colour scheme. Leave to dry.

Step Four:

Once dry, peel off the masking tape carefully. There might be a little bit of bleed (there was on mine!) but you can either touch it up, or leave it - I choose to leave it as I liked the rustic look!!!

Step Five:

Put your spice racks / bookshelves together! As with most Ikea products, the instructions are pretty easy to follow!

And here they are, the finished products. I think they look fab and the girls are delighted. For two little bookworms, these are going to come in very handy indeed!
