Sail Away with GoBoat London
We spent a magical sunny Sunday last weekend on the canals in London on one of the new self-drive boats from GoBoat London. Building on the tremendous success of GoBoat in Scandinavia, the mission of GoBoat London is to make the canal waters accessible to all those who live in and visit London.
The boats are powered by electric engines making it an easy way to captain your own boat - even the kids had a go! GoBoats carry up to eight people and no previous boating experience is necessary. The friendly crew at GoBoat go through all the important info to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
We took our best friends and kids and packed a picnic and off we went for the most relaxed 2 hours i've ever spent in London!
Starting at Merchant Square in Paddington Basin you travel up to Little Venice, from where two main routes are available: East to Camden, or West to Kensal Green and beyond. We chose to go East to Camden on a 2 hour trip. This picturesque route took us past some of the most historical sights on the London canals, such as Little Venice, Regents Park, London Zoo and Camden Lock.
I have to admit, we were worried that 2 hours on a boat with 4 kids ranging from the ages of 2-13 years was going to be hard work - were they going to get bored? Try to jump in the river? Or want to get off half way through...? But no, they absolutely loved it. We were given a bucket and nets so that the little ones could collect rubbish found in the canal. A brilliant way to do our bit to keep the canals clean. They all had a go steering the boat and they loved going through the tunnels, one of which was over 250m long! The kids were all given life jackets and there were plenty more in the boat if needed. Plus there was a handy skateboarding member of GoBoat that skated along the canals and was on hand if anything went wrong along the way!
All of us absolutely loved our experience on the canals. Such a beautiful way to see London - the gorgeous canal boats, the huge houses around Regents Park, the bustling Camden Lock... it was a perfect afternoon. We are already planning on going back to try the West route to Kensal Green.
Thanks GoBoat London for having us!
