I had the pleasure of attending a beautiful 10th birthday party the other day. It was hosted by the wonderful Alice Calcasola-van der List of All In One Season which is a showroom and workshop specialising in Dutch floral design. The party was for the delightful Jorja and her friends who had a wonderful time creating stunning floral designs that they could take home with them.
All In One Season was founded in 2002 by Dutch floral designer Alice Calcasola-van der List. Always inspired by nature Alice creates bespoke floral designs and sculpture using natural materials and flowers in her own distinctive style. Growing up in Holland Alice had a keen interest in nature from an early age and learnt many skills from her mother who was a keen gardener and from her father who was a carpenter. Fast forward to 2016 and Alice has married a carpenter, they have four children and have been busy refurbishing and building their home in Letchworth Garden City since 1999.
Since 2001, All In One Season has flourished and expanded with a new showroom and now run many design technique workshops including children's parties. As well as taking floral commissions Alice runs floral demos and workshops on location all over the UK and overseas.
Jorja's party started with the children all arriving and gathering around a large table where concrete heart pots and scissors had been laid out. Alice introduced herself and told the enthralled children all about floral design while handing out some dry, then wet Oasis for the children to touch to feel the difference and weight. Each child pushed their piece of Oasis into their pots ready to start their design.
Alice then got out some beautiful foliage and showed the children how to cut off small pieces and stick them into the Oasis to build a base for the flowers. They used Eucalyptus Nicholii to give fullness.
The children then began to add beautiful flowers to their design. Alice used a variety of flowers including Rosa Dolcetto, Delphinium and Tulips. Alice gave them clear instructions on how to cut the flowers and where to place them to really build a stunning design.
The girls were having a wonderful time learning about the flower names and building stunning designs. They really got to grips with it quickly and were taking such pride in their work, it was such a lovely party. Alice then got out pretty extras to place in amongst their flowers. They could choose from hearts and butterflies in all different colours. The girls were so excited and flurried around Alice to choose.
Then came the glitter. Alice showed us drawers and drawers of glitter, beads, ribbon, shells - it was a craft lovers dream! The girls chose their favourite colour glitter and Alice helped them spray special flower glue on to their designs and sprinkle glitter over them to create a sparkly finish.
Once the designs were done it was time to PARTY! Alice took them through to a big dining table with a huge glass chandelier overhead to eat their party food, have some laughs and Jorja blew out her candles on her amazing rainbow cake.
A wonderful time was had by all and for a little girl, the Dutch floral party is a wonderfully unique way to celebrate a special birthday. The designs looked amazing and each guest got to take their design home. I'd say that's a pretty cool alternative to a party bag!
Why not celebrate your child’s birthday with a Dutch floral design workshop or come with a group of girls for a fun packed floral night out! Whatever the occasion, All In One Season can cater for you.
